Help from the Comfort of Home

Help from the Comfort of Home

Distance and scheduling shouldn’t stand between a patient and the care they need. Through telepsychiatry, Apogee Behavioral Medicine provides psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and therapy to patients across Virginia through secure video visits, with same-day appointments available in some cases.

Patients near our Charlottesville location and throughout Virginia can use telehealth to supplement in-person care or receive care entirely from home—no need to live near one of our physical offices.

Conditions We Treat with Telehealth Appointments in Virginia

Telehealth does not limit the scope of care a patient receives. Apogee’s clinicians treat the same range of conditions virtually that they treat in person, and for many patients, a video visit provides the same clinical benefit as an office visit.

We provide telehealth treatment for ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions. Same-day telehealth appointments may be available for ADHD and related concerns, allowing patients to begin treatment without an extended wait.

Conditions treated by telehealth include, but are not limited to:

Same-day Appointments

Patients who need to be seen quickly should not have to wait weeks for an opening. When provider availability allows, Apogee offers same-day appointments for both in-person and telehealth visits, giving patients a faster path into the evaluation and treatment process.

Telehealth

What is Telehealth / Telepsychiatry?

Telehealth is mental health care delivered through secure video rather than an in-person visit. Telepsychiatry refers specifically to psychiatric care delivered this way, while teletherapy refers to therapy sessions provided virtually.

A telehealth appointment follows much of the same structure as an in-person visit. The psychiatrist or therapist reviews the patient’s history, discusses current symptoms, and develops an appropriate plan going forward. The primary difference is the setting; care is delivered through a smartphone, tablet, or computer rather than an exam room. With a patient’s consent, a family member can also join a telehealth visit when doing so is clinically appropriate, which can be more difficult to arrange for an in-person appointment.

Telehealth care is regulated based on the patient’s physical location during the appointment, not the provider’s location. Virginia requires that providers hold appropriate licensure for the state in which the patient is located at the time of the visit.

How Telehealth Works

A telehealth visit requires a private space, a device with a camera, and a reliable internet connection.

Apogee provides access to a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform at no additional cost, and patients are not required to install software in advance of their appointment. The clinicians conducting telehealth visits are the same psychiatrists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and therapists who see patients in our offices, rather than a separate group of online-only providers.

Before an appointment, patients should confirm they are in a private location and that their device and connection are working properly. Patients should also be prepared to confirm their location, since telehealth regulations are based on where the patient is situated during the visit.

Telepsychiatry and Online Therapy Services

Through telehealth, Apogee’s clinicians provide:

Some patients complete all of their appointments through telehealth. Others combine virtual and in-person visits depending on their treatment plan and weekly schedule. A provider can help determine which approach best fits a patient’s needs.

Benefits of Telehealth

Convenience: Patients avoid the commute and waiting room, connecting instead from any private space with a stable internet connection.

Flexibility: When illness, weather, or a scheduling conflict would otherwise require canceling an in-person appointment, telehealth often allows the visit to continue as planned.

Access: Telehealth extends access to psychiatric and therapy services without requiring travel across the state.

Insurance: Apogee accepts many major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Coverage still depends on the patient’s specific plan and state, so our staff can help you to verify benefits before scheduling.

FAQs for Telehealth Visits

Is telehealth therapy effective?

Research consistently shows that telehealth therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most mental health conditions. Many patients find the added convenience actually helps them stay more consistent with their care.

Can I get prescriptions through telehealth appointments?

Yes. Our prescribing providers can manage medications through telehealth appointments in compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations.

What is the difference between telehealth and teletherapy?

Telehealth is a broad term that covers all remote healthcare services, including psychiatric care and medication management. Teletherapy specifically refers to therapy sessions conducted online. At Apogee, we offer both teletherapy in North Carolina and full telepsychiatry services, including diagnosis and prescribing.

Can you be diagnosed by a psychiatrist online?

Yes. Our virtual psychiatrists are fully licensed and can evaluate and diagnose mental health conditions through telehealth appointments, just as they would in person.

Will all of my appointments be online?

We offer both online and in-person appointments. If you prefer telehealth sessions only, you can get the treatment you need entirely online. If you want to see your provider in person sometimes, or all the time, you have the flexibility to do that as well.

Which telepsychiatry services prescribe depression medications?

Our licensed psychiatrists, physician assistants, and advanced nurse practitioners can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medication for depression and other conditions via telehealth. Ongoing medication management via telehealth is available to ensure your treatment stays effective over time.

Does Virginia allow telehealth across state lines?

In some circumstances, yes, though the practice is governed by state licensing requirements. Generally, the state where the patient is physically located during the appointment determines which licensing rules apply, and the provider must be licensed accordingly. Patients traveling outside Virginia should notify their provider in advance so it can be confirmed whether the appointment can proceed.

How much does online therapy cost?

The cost of online therapy depends on the patient’s insurance plan, benefits, and the specific service provided. Apogee accepts many major insurance plans, including Medicare, though coverage varies by plan and state. Our staff can verify insurance coverage before an appointment is scheduled.

Can ChatGPT do therapy?

No. Tools such as ChatGPT can offer general information or conversational support, but they are not a substitute for a licensed therapist or psychiatrist. For diagnosis, medication management, or ongoing therapy, working with a licensed mental health professional remains the appropriate path forward.
