About Emily Spain
Hello! My name is Emily, and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) who earned my Master of Counseling from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. I have experience working with adults, teens, and children with a variety of mental health concerns. I focus on working with individuals experiencing eating disorders/disordered eating, anxiety, depression, suicidality, self-harm, a history of trauma, interpersonal conflict, life transitions, and identity exploration. I am especially passionate about providing members of the LGBTQIA+ community with affirming, empowering care as they navigate mental health challenges.
Your identities and lived experiences matter, and it is my job as a therapist to work collaboratively with you to foster an environment where you feel safe to explore mental healing, process your current and past realities, and grow a deeper understanding of yourself. To support these goals, I incorporate a variety of therapeutic interventions, with an emphasis on interventions from person-centered therapy, narrative therapy, feminist theory, and dialectical behavior therapy. I utilize these approaches to emphasize mindful nonjudgment, empathy, client autonomy, and addressing systemic factors as ways of inspiring processing and change. I have also received extensive experience in Trauma-Focused Dialectical Behavior Therapy (TF-DBT) during my clinical internship in graduate school and have completed Phases 1 and 2 of Brainspotting, a trauma processing modality.
Outside of work, I find joy in being in nature, reading, creating poetry and collages, and spending time with loved ones. I also love reconnecting with my younger self by revisiting media from my childhood and cooking familiar recipes for new and old friends, family, and myself.
