North Carolina Medicaid Is Changing

North Carolina Medicaid is changing, and some members may be affected beginning in 2026 and 2027.

Changes may include new requirements for certain adults ages 19–64, changes to Medicaid renewal requirements, and changes affecting eligibility for some non-U.S. citizens. Not all Medicaid members will be affected.

Because Medicaid rules and individual eligibility can be complicated, NC Medicaid is the best source for the most current information about your coverage and what you need to do.

What You Can Do Now

To help avoid interruptions in your coverage:

  • Keep your contact information current with your local Department of Social Services (DSS).
  • Watch for letters and notices about your Medicaid coverage.
  • Respond to requests for information by the stated deadline.
  • Complete any required Medicaid renewal.
  • Keep documentation that may be needed to verify your eligibility.

Medicaid Changes to Know About

Adults ages 19–64: Beginning January 1, 2027, most adults in this age group will need to meet new work and community engagement requirements to maintain Medicaid coverage. Some people are exempt. Certain members will also have more frequent Medicaid renewals.

Certain non-U.S. citizens: Beginning October 1, 2026, new eligibility rules will apply to some non-U.S. citizens.
